Q0. How do I use the app for marine navigation?

Q1.I am receiving 'Error 201 Tunnel Failed' or 'Error connection timeout'.
A1.It means that network options are not conifgured correctly on the device. To configure network options do the following:
- Select 'Network Options' on HomeScreen. This will take you to a Screen that says: 'Select a transport screen'
- Click Menu->AutoDiag. This will try to figure out the network settings for you. If it succeeds it will prompt you to 'Save' the network options.
If you know your Network Setting, please configure it manually on this Screen.
Q2. My device supports Wi-fi. I want to use Wi-fi to download the maps.
A2. You can configure your 'Network Options' manually. Please note that once you set Wi-fi manually and you go to an area where you do not have 'Wi-fi' coverage, you will have to set your 'Network Options' again.
- Select 'Network Options' on HomeScreen. This will take you to a Screen that says: 'Select a transport screen'
- Select 'Wi-fi' and run 'Diagnose'. If it succeeds it will prompt you to 'Save' these settings.
Q3. I am running out of disk/flash space. What should I do?
A3. You can do the following to free up disk space.
- You can delete maps you no longer need. We let you download the same map multiple times.
- You can delete older tracks. Before you delete older tracks, we recommend that you export your tracks. To export tracks, select the tracks you want to export, and select 'Export' from the menu.
Q4. Do I need cellphone coverage or internet connectivity on the slopes for the software to work?
A4. No. Once the resort map is downloaded to the device, you do not need cellphone or internet coverage for the software to work.
Q5. How do I enable GPS on Verizon Blackberry Storm, Blackberry Tour and Blackberry Bold?
A5. You must enable GPS on verizon's Blackberry Stom and Blackberry tour to use GPS features of the software. To enable GPS do the following:
- Select Options->Advanced Options ->GPS

Under GPS , set Location On to 'GPS enabled' if it is set to 'E911 only' and 'Location Aiding' to 'Enabled'.

Q6. I am a verizon customer. Would this software work for me?
A6. Features that do not use GPS would work on all Blackberry devices running OS, higher than or equal to 4.2. If you are using GPS, the following devices would work for Verizon customers.
- Blackberry Tour
- Blackberry Storm
- Blackberry Bold
- 9330
Q7. I am an AT&T customer . Would this software work for me?
A7. Yes, if your device is running OS, higher than or equal to 4.2. AT&T does not lock the GPS on blackberries they sell. The software can be dowloaded for free.
Q8. I am a Sprint customer . Would this software work for me?
A8. Yes, if your device is running OS, higher than or equal to 4.2. Sprint does not lock the GPS on blackberries they sell. The software can be dowloaded for free.
Q9. I have a blackberry from a smaller carrier. How do I check if the software works for me?
A9. Features that do not use GPS would work on all Blackberry devices running OS, higher than or equal to 4.2. For GPS related features to work, the GPS chip should not be locked by your carrier. You can either contact your carrier or send us an email and we can look up that information for you.
Q10. Can I export recorded tracks ot of my blackberry?
A10. Yes, you can. Go to 'View Tracks[ -> 'Resort' -> Day and Select the tracks you want to export.
Q11. How do I launch track recording?
A11.
- From the HomeScreen, do "Select Map"-> "Your chart ". This will open the map of "Your chart".
- Once you are looking at the map of "Your chart", press Menu. From the menu, select "Record". If your device has GPS this will turn on track recording. You would initially see "Scan" in red color at the bottom right of your screen. This is when the device is scanning the sky to lock on to Satellites. When the device is locked onto satellites, it will show "Rec." in Red at the bottom right corner of your Screen. Sometimes locking on to satellites can take a minute or so. So please allow at least a minute or so for the indicator to turn to "Rec."
- To turn off Recording at any point, when on the "Your chart's" map screen, press Menu and select "Stop".
Q12. How do I view my location at any time?
.A12. To view your location at any time:
- When you are looking at the map, press Menu, select "MyLocation". This will show you your location on the map. Again this will be instantaneous if the device is locked onto satellites. Otherwise, it will show "Locating" at the bottom of the screen until it is able to locate you.
Q13. What is "Interval" under Options?
A14. The interval setting determines how frequently we record your position, speed etc. By default the value is 3 second. You can change this number to lower for more frequent sampling or turn it higher to save on battery . For an AT&T curve, we were able to track for 6 to 8 hours with interval as 1 second.
Q14. During map download, I get this error: “java.io.IOException: HTTP response code: 413”. What does it mean and how can I get around it?
A14.
Please try the following to get around this error.
1. From HomeScreen of the app, Select NetWork Options -> 'DIRECT-TCP'.
From menu select "Diagnose". If that succeeds, it will prompt you to save "Direct TCP" as transport.
- Try downloading your map again if "Direct TCP" succeeds.
2. If "Direct TCP fails, please try the following:
- From HomeScreen, Select NetWork Options -> 'WAP2'.
From menu select "Diagnose". If that succeeds, it will prompt you to save "WAP2" as transport.
- Try downloading your map again if "WAP2" succeeds.
If all fails, please contact support@gpsnauticalcharts.com with the name of your carrier and we will troubleshoot it for you.
Q15. How does the app get to my device?
A15 The app get downloaded OTA (over the air) using the phone's data plan. If you are able to check email and serf internet on your blackberry then you already have a data plan.
- On you blackberry, start you browser and click on software tab at gpsnauticalcharts.com. You can go to the software tab directly from here.
- On the softwar page, click on the 'download' link for your device.
Please note that you have to use blackberry internet browser to download the software.
Q16. I am on Vodafone UK. Would the app work for me?
A 16. Yes we have blackberry owners on Vodafone UK network using the app.
Vodafone users need to give permissions to allow the applications to access web. So you might have to do the following for a blackberry running on Vodafone UK network.
Instructions for all blackberry vodafone users
1. Use the Vodafone WAP browser. It is called Vodafone live. Click on the icon. It would take you to a 'first time user' page that you must respond to before you can get any further. This needs to be done once.
(All the request made by our app were most likely going to this Portal instead of coming to our servers.).
2. Once you have used the WAP browser, from the Network Options on our app, select 'WAP2', diagnose and select 'Yes' when prompted to save.
Now you should be able to refresh map list, download maps etc.
If you have a blackberry with wifi access
If your blackberry has wi-fi access, please choose 'wi-fi' from Network Options of the app, diagnose and select 'Yes' when prompted to save.
Q17. I am on O2 UK. Would the app work for me?
A 17. Yes we have blackberry owners on O2 UK network using the app.

Search for maps:
- You can search for charts by title or feature name. For e.g if you are going to 'Neah bay' , simply search for Neah bay. It will show you a list of relevant charts. Once you download a chart of interest, we strongly suggest that you use "Show Nearby Charts" to complete your coverage.
Q-19 Do I need to manually switch to a new chart as I scroll across the map?
A-19 If there are charts of the same scale, covering a bigger area, the app would do the seamless mosaicing for you. In other cases, you may have to manually switch charts for now. Our engineering team is working to make it easier.
Q-20 Are the charts GPS accurate?
A-20Yes, the charts are GPS accurate. They have been reprojected to WGS84, the standard used by GPS chips in all mobile and embedded devices.
Q-21 How do I create a custom way point?
A-21There are two ways to create a custom way point.
- Create waypoint for your current location usingyour GPS
In this mode the app automatically figures out your current location using the device GPS, and prompts you to enter the way point name once the way point is created.
2. Manually select a point on the map
In this mode you can scroll through the map to manually select a point where you wan to create the way point.
3. Manually select a latitude, longitude coordinate
In this mode you can enter the latitude-longitude coordinate of the way point (in degrees, degree-minute-second or degree-minute format).
Q-22 What are POIs?
A-22 POIs are points of interest for a marine navigator. We include every chart with a POI layer derived from the equivalent ENC convering the same chart.
Q-23 Is POI search offline?
A-23
Yes, all POIs are stored on the device. Searching for POIs in downloaded charts does not require any internet connectivity.
Q-24 How do I search for waypoints I have created manually?
A-24 Waypoints are automatically searched when you do POI search. So doing a regular POI search would also show your way points.
Q-25 Can I add additional zoom level to the maps?
A-26 Yes, to enable an additional zoom level, please do the following:
- From HomeScreen of the app, select Options
- Check the box that says "Enable digital zoom" and click "Save".

Q-31 Do you support external USB GPS for Windows desktop?
A-30 Yes, it is supported for Windows desktops running OS 10 or higher. Please make sure that your GPS driver installs itself as a COM port device.
